Starting with Jenga, they started calling him “villain” instead of “villain” or “bad guy.”
Is it because he’s not necessarily a bad guy, but a bad guy with a reason?
There are villains and heroes in the world of microbiomes.
What if we gave hero characters to difficult fungal names?
For example, Akkermansia corresponds to a hero like Iron Man.
And let’s decide on Fusobacterium as today’s Thanos.
In 2011, researchers discovered that Fusobacterium thrives in colon cancer cells and is often associated with ulcerative colitis. The researchers haven’t yet determined whether the organism actually causes these diseases or simply thrives in the environment they create. A lot of other papers have also labeled this bacterium a bad guy.
The decisive moment that convinced me that this fungus was the villain started with the case of a man in his 50s early last year. He was a seaside man who believed his intestines were healthy and liked raw fish, but the concentration of Fusobacterium was noticeably higher in the analysis results than the samples I had seen so far. Although I was not sure that it was the villain, I cautiously recommended a colonoscopy at a hospital based on the literature, and a few days later, I heard that a colon polyp was found and removed.
After gaining confidence, I recommended the test to another person who had a lower concentration but a similar bacteria distribution, and I was able to find another polyp. And we have been continuously nagging at people who like alcohol and raw fish.
People in their 20s and 30s with strong intestines can easily defeat this type of villain. However, if you are over 50 or a teenager who frequently suffers from enteritis, you need to be careful. Crucially, this bacteria is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cannot be eliminated with regular antibiotics.
The infinite ecosystem of gut microbes is another universe in my stomach, and in it exist villains, heroes, and countless other people. It seems certain that the secrets and causes of health and disease are all hidden within it.
